Patron Saint Of Sailors
When Nicholas was still a young priest he took a journey from Patara to Jerusalem in the Holy Land. The fastest way of traveling in those days was by sailing ship. So Father Nicholas boarded a ship at Patara and sailed for the port of Caesarea. From there Jerusalem was just a few days journey overland.
Quite a storm came up while Father Nicholas was on board the ship. The ship ran aground and the sailors and passengers feared for their lives. The captain of the ship asked Nicholas to lead them in prayer and during the prayer the winds and the sea became calm. The ship, its crew and passengers were all saved by Father Nicholas’ prayer. Later when Bishop Nicholas died the sailors proclaimed him as their patron saint. To this day Greek sailors carry a statue or icon of Saint Nicholas on board their ships and all pray to the Saint for a safe journey.
The second figure in The Legend of Saint Nicholas Limited Edition Collector Series depicts the young priest Father Nicholas in the bow of the ship offering his prayer to God for a safe journey.
