Legend of St. Nicholas

Saint Nicholas

The Legend of Saint Nicholas
Saint Nicholas is both a man and a spirit. Nicholas, the man, was born in Patara, Asia Minor (southeast Turkey) about 280. Saint Nicholas is the spirit of love, concern and generosity.Nicholas was born to older parents who were well-to-do merchants. He was named after his uncle who was a priest.
Nicholas grew up in a small Christian community to which his parents belonged. He was taught Christian principles and learned from the Bible. He was also well educated in secular subjects in the best school in Patara.

Nicholas was taught to help others
His parents taught Nicholas to care for and help those in need. They often took him along when they went to help a neighbor or take food and money to a needy family.

When Nicholas was a teenager an epidemic killed his parents along with many others in Patara. He decided to join his uncle’s monastery. But before he went to the monastery to become a priest he wanted to give away his inheritance. This began a practice that would cause him to be remembered for centuries: giving to others in secret, often in the dark hours of the night.
